Your new hardwood floors is a wonderful investment in your house and obviously, you are going to want to protect that investment! With appropriate protection and maintenance, your flooring will serve your family well for several years to come. Here are a few ways you can protect your hardwood from damage!

The Right Finish

Whether you purchased your flooring pre-finished or you chose planks that will be finished after they're installed in your home, choosing the right finish can make a difference. Not only does the proper wax and finish keep your floors looking their best, but these things will also maintain the wood protected against damage.

Keep it Clean

Another great way to minimize risks to your hardwood is to just keep it clean. A simple, dry wash
should do the trick for regular tidying up. If you want something a bit more powerful, select a good quality cleaner specifically created for hardwood floors. Your floor contractor will be able to point you in the right direction. Whatever you do, don't use water to clean your hardwood flooring, as water can lead to damage. Furthermore, if anything has spilled on the timber it should be cleaned up immediately to minimize damage.

Rugs and Mats


When avoiding hardwood floor damage, rugs and mats are really beneficial. Put a mat at each entry and exit door. Place blinds and drapes on all of your windows to prevent sun damage. It may not be what you are used to, but in most cultures throughout the world nobody wears shoes within their homes. It might be beneficial to put a shoe rack near the front door.
When you have furniture which is going to be sitting on the hardwood, you can minimize damage from scrapes by installing felt pads on the "feet" of your furniture. Just make sure you check these regularly, because they do sometimes come off or workout.
